Temple,TX — A Belton man was arrested Thursday after officers say they found him attempting to steal copper.
According to police, Thursday morning, around 3:04 a.m., a patrol officer observed a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of E. Central Avenue. The officer reported the vehicle was parked in the alley beside the historic “Arcadia Theater” with the headlights on.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer observed a strap extending from the van connected to a segment of copper wire attached to the building. Officers made contact with the occupants of the van. Officers could see additional pieces of similar wiring inside the van, and during the course of the interview one subject admitted they had removed the wiring from the vacant building.
The suspect was identified as Kenneth Villow Craighill, 52, of Belton.
The case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office on January 30, 2014, and a complaint issued by that office charging Craighill with theft of metal, a state jail felony.
Craighill was in the Bell County Jail pending arraignment.
Investigation into all previous copper thefts is still ongoing.
