Temple Police arrest alleged copper thief

Temple Police have arrested a man for copper theft.

On Tuesday morning at 3:33 a.m., Temple Police were called for reports of an unknown man on the roof of a "Harper Talasek Funeral Home" in the 500 block west Barton Avenue.

Officers converged on the business from all four directions and upon securing the scene, officers could see a man on the roff near the air conditioning units.

The officers ordered the man, Benjamin Chason, 26, of Temple, to come down from the roof. Chason was taken into custody without incident.

After a search, officers found a small amount of marijuana in his possession, they also check the roof of the building and found a set of bolt cutters.

Officers further discovered pieces of copper piping that had been cut from the various air conditioning units.

Detectives have reviewed the felony criminal mischief case with Bell County District Attorney's Office and a complain was issued today charging Chason possession of marijuana and criminal tresspassing.

He is currently in Bell County Jail.
