Austin, TX — The State of Texas is trying to recoup more than $27 million in unpaid toll violations by posting the names of their most egregious offenders online.
Starting Wednesday, the Texas Department of Transportation will release and post the identities of Texas drivers who each are responsible for at least 100 unpaid violations.
Senate Bill 1792 gives the department the authority to do so.
State officials say the unpaid fines are essentially theft, and that the money could serve the state and its populace well.
“These violators are stealing taxpayers’ money,” said Ken Roberts of TxDOT's Waco district. “The kind of money that could be used to maintain and repair existing roadways, or even to construct new ones. So, we’re going out with this information to law enforcement and the public in an attempt to collect these millions of dollars that these violators have cheated the state from.”
