Train derailment in Leon County closes down U.S. Hwy 79

The Texas Department of Transportation has closed U.S. Highway 79 just south of Jewitt at the Nucor Plant because a train derailment.

Emergency crews are on scene at this time working on the derailment and cleaning up the area.

TxDOT is estimating the highway will be closed for about eight hours.

There is a detour around the derailment. The detour will go from Farm to Market Road 39, to Farm to Market Road 3501, to Farm to Market Road 1512, and then back onto U.S. Highway 79.

18-wheelers are being detoured from U.S. Highway 79 to SH 7 east in Marquez to Farm to Market Road 39, and back to U.S. Highway 79 to help drivers navigate turns better.
