Waco, TX — This week millions of Central Texans will be travelling to visit family for Thanksgiving, but TxDOT wants to urge drivers to take it easy.
Luckily there will be no construction along Interstate 35 this week, but rain and freezing temperatures could play a factor.
Ken Roberts of Texas Department of Transportation’s Waco district said drivers can sign up for alerts on my35.org or drivetexas.org to avoid accidents.
The department wants to remind drivers to stay off electronic devices when driving, have a designated driver, or simply stay with family if they drink too much, but the biggest thing that affects holiday traffic is patience and planning.
“Make some plans,” said Roberts. “Leave early. Take your time. There’s going to be a lot of people out there so be patient. You may run into some situations along the way as a result of heavy traffic, or inclement weather. All of these things play into it so people need to plan ahead.”
According to DPS, more than 9,500 were given out during Thanksgiving weekend last year in Texas.
