A man driving on Highway 47 was able escape a burning vehicle after he struck a guardrail.

Bryan Public Information Officer Kelley McKethan said emergency crews responded to a major accident in the 6700 block of Highway 47 near Villa Maria at around 8 p.m. An SUV was headed south on the highway when it drifted left and hit the guardrail. The guardrail shot through the engine and lit the vehicle on fire.

The driver, a 35-year-old man, made it out of the vehicle without serious injuries. He was taken to a local hospital and transferred to Houston in stable condition.

Fatigue is considered to be a contributing factor in the accident.
