A Waco man was arrested early Friday morning, after he used a high intensity spotlight to blind two DPS officers.

According to Trooper D.L. Wilson of DPS, the two DPS officers were assisting Waco Police Department in a search in response to a public disturbance call around 12:20 a.m. Both officers were using night vision goggles as they searched the Waco area in a helicopter. The helicopter was flighing south of Sherman Street in East Waco when the pilot was blinded by a spotlight on the ground. Wilson says the technical flight officer had to take over the flight for a few minutes until the pilot could see again.

The helicopter then flew over to the area where the light was coming from until officers on the ground could figure out where the light was coming from. Waco Police officers identified and arrested Gary Don Williams, 28. Officers say he was responsible for shining the light from his home in the 300 block of Turner Street.

Williams was released on a $2,000 bond Friday afternoon. He is charged with illumination of an aircraft\ impaired operations ability.
