Waco man sentenced to federal prison for smuggling Mexican drug cartel money

A Waco man arrested in Lorena back in 2010, was sentenced to federal prison after he pleaded guilty to smuggling U.S. currency for a Mexican drug cartel.

Carlos Mercado was sentenced by U.S.District Judge Walter S. Smith, Jr., to 5 years in prison, 3 years supervised release, and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

Court records show, Mercado was facing an additional charge of intent to distribute marijuana charge but it was dismissed.

In February 2010, McLennan County sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle in which Mercado was a passenger in.

Upon searching the vehicle, deputies found $18,000 in cash in Mercado's jacket. Officers then found an additional $1,000 in the front seat and more than $100,000 hidden in a horse trailer.

Records show the money was suppose to be given to the the Los Zetas drug cartel.
