Since November of 2013 Waco Police have received three cases where victims have fallen for scammers on various dating websites. Typical cases have involved promises of marriage and end up eliciting money from well meaning victims through wire transfers overseas.

On the cases that have been reported to us so far, the female victims have corresponded with what was thought to be businessmen that they have become involved in an on-line relationship with. Suspects have set up believable profiles and are able to convince the victim to wire large amounts of money to them for business adventures. Victims typically have been involved with the suspects for several months and became very comfortable and confident with the promises they are told.

Of the cases that have been reported to us, victims have lost $3,000, $5,000, and $15,000 to the scammers. Once monies are transferred the possibility of finding the suspect/s is VERY slim. The transfers have been wired to overseas accounts and typically those accounts are closed the minute the money is withdrawn. We have victims that have used Match.com, Zoosk.com and Christianmingle.com as well.

We cannot stress enough the importance of safety to our citizens when dealing with these types of sites. The potential for things to go wrong when sending large amounts of money to someone you do not know is great and the probability of money recover or arrest of the suspects is low.
