A man police say is responsible for running a stolen car chop shop in Waco is now in jail facing theft charges.

A Waco resident went outside to see several people stealing his car. He hopped in his other car and gave chase. A third car, a black Ford Mustang, tried to intervene during the chase. The people then abandoned the stolen car.

A short time later, police officers spotted the same black Mustang at a house in the 3900 block of North 20th Street.

Upon further investigation, officers noticed the house’s backyard was littered with stolen cars and multiple auto parts.

Rodolfo Cruz, 25, was arrested and charged with two counts of theft.

Police say chop shops can also bring other criminal activity to the area.

“A lot of times the drug trade will be there as well. Many times the deal auto parts for drugs or other stolen property. It can lead to lots of other criminal activity so we’ll see where this heads," said Sgt. Patrick Swanton of Waco Police.

Swanton said the department may make additional arrests in connection to the crime.
