Right now, Waco police and fire departments are asking the community to be vigilant in keeping Waco safe. A rise in the number of house fires, especially vacant ones, in North Waco, have officials looking into the possibility of criminal activity.

"Because it's an increased number, some of the fires do have similarities," said Waco Fire Marshal Kevin Vranich.

Within the past 18 months, Waco Police Department reports about two dozen fires in North Waco. And, for officials, that doesn't appear to be just some coincidence.

"That area is no more prone to fires than any other area within Waco," said Vranich.

Even more strange, fire officials say vacant homes don't typically just catch fire because there is no occupant living inside, requiring the use of electricity.

"We have ruled out electrical, due to the fact that there's no utilities, water, gas, electric on in most of the houses," said Vranich.

So, authorities are seeking your help. Be on the lookout for any suspicious activity happening around your neighborhood.

"It's good to be aware of their surroundings, for the neighbors to be on the lookout for something that just doesn't fit, suspicious people or suspicious activity," said Vranich.

And, don't hesitate to call police if you see anything out of the ordinary.
