A new scam has appeared in the area and is targeting Hispanic members of the community.

Two cases are being worked on by Waco police and both cases have said they have lost two to three thousand dollars due to the scam.

Here's how it works:

An individual will get a phone call from an international number of a blocked number. the caller will tell the victim that they (suspect/caller) have detained a family member of the victim with an undeclared amount of cash at an airport. The airport will either be in the United States or in Mexico.

The suspects will demand money be wired via Western Union for the release of the victim's family member. On at least one occasion the suspect will use an actual family name.

Often times the original call is followed up by a repeat call demanding additional cash.

Once the money is wire the suspects will retrieve the money via transfer and are seldom found.

Waco police is strongly encouraging citizens to not fall prey to these type of scams.

If anyone has any questions as to the legitimacy of the call in question, please call Waco Police at 750-7500.
