COLLEGE STATION -- It was on this day back in 1812 when President Madison declared war on Great Britain.
Now, on the 200 year anniversary, the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial board of directors unveiled a new statue at Veterans Park in College Station.
The statue called "Don't Give up the Ship" depicts a sailor in action and Army veteran, Jerry Hince, says this is a great addition to the park since so many often forget about the War of 1812.
"You have all these little skirmishes but they weren't little skirmishes to the families involved and they weren't little skirmishes to the history of the United States of America. It's all important that places like Veterans Park keep history alive because that's how our youngsters and future generations will learn about history."
The "Don't Give up the Ship" statue joins five others along the Lynn Stuart Pathway and the board of directors hopes to have all 18 statues unveiled by 2026, when the United States turns 250-years old.
