Woman charged with arson for Killeen hotel fire

Killeen Fire Department investigates a fire at the Modern Inn on Root Ave.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call at 7:16pm to the Modern Inn located at 1010 Root Ave., on Saturday, July 20, 2013. Upon their arrival, they saw fire coming from a room on the top floor. The occupant was safely evacuated from the room by officers’ and the firefighters conducted a sweep for precautionary measures. The room received fire damage and two adjacent rooms received smoke damage.

The Killeen Fire Marshall’s office is investigating this case as Arson and one suspect has been identified.

UPDATE- July 31, 2013

This case was reviewed on July 24, 2013 by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and a complaint for Arson was issued and a warrant was obtained from Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin charging 48 year old Catherine Emma Mitchem of Killeen.

A Crime Stoppers tip was received on the suspect’s whereabouts. Officers were sent to the 3200 block of Cantabrian Drive to identify Mitchem; where she was located and arrested without incident.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke set her bond at $50,000; she is currently awaiting transport to the Bell County Jail.
