Waco, Tx — While many cities will be kicking off December with Christmas parades, the City of Waco will not be holding one this year.
It is a sad reality for some, like Donald Davis, Executive Director of the Historic Waco Foundation. "I think that it's something that needs to be picked back up. With all the interest that's going on with downtown development and everything, I think it's exciting what's going on in downtown. And, I think the parade need to be a part of that," said Davis.
Davis says the parade this year was not canceled, but rather it was never scheduled. He says for many years, the Junior Chamber of Waco sponsored the parade, along with Downtown Waco and Keep Waco Beautiful. However, when the Junior Chamber went out of business four years ago, the parade was canceled that year. The Historic Waco Foundation felt like the parade was something that was missing, Davis says, so they picked up the task of hosting it the past two years.
Davis says the first year the Foundation hosted the parade, they anticipated things going even more smoothly the next year. However, last year the parade was canceled due to nonstop rain. Davis says that ended up putting the Foundation out of around three thousand dollars. He said that in turn compromised their annual Christmas on the Brazos.
Therefore, Davis says the Foundation directors agreed in early January of this year that the parade was not a part of their mission, and they told the city they would not be in a place to sponsor it this year. However, they would be more than willing to participate as they have done for many years in the past.
No other sponsor stepped up to hold the parade, therefore there will not be one this year. The downtown Christmas tree will still have a lighting ceremony, however. The Historic Waco Foundation will still be holding their Christmas on the Brazos, featuring a "Tour of Homes", "Secrets for Santa", a holiday style show, a candlelight evening event, and more.
