NAVASOTA, Tx (KYLE) — The town of Navasota is known for its deep rooted Texas history and its small town charm feel but with old age comes crumbling sidewalks and deteriorating buildings.
Now the city is taking steps towards preserving their historical landmarks with a downtown re-modeling project.
If you take a drive down Washington Avenue you'll instantly feel like you've stepped back in time.
Kathy Prescott says that's exactly why her daughter decided to open up a baby boutique, Paris Pink and Cowboy Blue, right here in downtown Navasota.
"We love all these old buildings," said Prescott. "They have a little bit more character than a new building."
But after more than 100 years crumbling concrete and massive cracks liter the sidewalks, making it unsafe, which is why the city is upgrading all of the sidewalks, a phase in their downtown revitalization project.
"We want to make it attractive so people will want to come downtown, enjoy our beautiful buildings and enjoy our city as well," said Navasota city manager, Brad Stafford.
In keeping with the downtown's historical feel the sidewalks will get new brick pavers, period street lighting and new planter boxes.
But as a business owner, hearing the word construction, is frightening.
"I think the contractor understands why we are so apprehensive about it," said Prescott. "We really want the new sidewalks but we don't want to lose our customers."
Weather permitting, the construction should only take around 90 days to complete.
A little bit of pain for a lot of gain.
"I think it'll help the shopping and bring in more revenue into the town so we're really excited about the new sidewalks," said Prescott.
Prescott says business will operate like normal during the construction period.
