CHICAGO -- Officials say 18 human heads found at O'Hare Airport were shipped from Rome and apparently bound for a research facility in the United States, but were held up by customs.
The heads had been embalmed and packaged in coolers.
According to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the specimens were shipped before Christmas; but, they have been held by customs because the final destination was not clearly indicated on the paperwork.
The intended recipient of the shipment has not come forward.
The ME's office says if no one comes forward to claim the heads, then they will be buried in Cook County.
The FBI, along with customs and homeland security officials, are still investigating.
