BRYAN, Tx (KYLE) — Tragedy struck Friday night when 36-year-old Lt. Eric Wallace died while battling a blaze at the Knights of Columbus hall.
Bryan Fire Chief, Randy McGregor said, "I can't describe to you what went through this organization."
If dealing with the loss of own of their own wasn't difficult enough, the unimaginable happened Saturday when 54-year-old Lt. Greg Pickard passed away from his injuries he sustained while trying to rescue Lt. Wallace.
"The passing of Lt. Wallace just completely overwhelmed us and with the passing of Lt. Pickard, it just came down upon us again," said McGregor.
Both lieutenants dedicated their lives to service and died doing what they love.
Lt. Wallace, a husband and father of five was a nearly 13-year veteran of the department.
"Eric did so many things above and beyond, so many projects he was involved with here -- something he chose to be involved with."
Lt. Pickard, a 32-year veteran, was a husband, a father to two and grandfather to three and just like Lt. Wallace; he was a leader in and out of the department.
"He's one of those guys that everybody just felt comfortable talking to," said McGregor. "I feel very blessed to have spent much of my career around him but he would want us to continue on as would Lt. Wallace and that's just what we're going to do."
But first the department plans to say their final farewells to their fallen brothers later this week.
The community has a chance to honor the two heroes tomorrow at a public memorial held at Central Baptist Church at 10 a.m..
