Central Texas — Some Central Texans are going to start being required to dial all ten digits when calling locally due to changes in the phone lines starting this Saturday.
The Texas Public Utilities Commission has announced that beginning June 1, those living in the 512 area code will have to start dialing the area code plus the phone number, even when calling locally. Also, to ensure there are enough telephone numbers in the future, a new area coded, 737, is being given to new phone numbers in the area.
Those who have automatic dialing equipment or other equipment that is pre-programmed with a seven digit number will have to reprogram the equipment with the ten digit dialing procedure.
Current area codes will not change for those who are already assigned a 512 number, which includes parts of Milam and most of Lampasas Counties. There won't be an extra charge when calling locally even though the new procedure requires dialing ten digits.
