In an effort to increase water safety awareness, Heart of Texas Drowning Prevention Coalition is encouraging people to Pledge to 'Wear It!' this July 4th Holiday. This July 4th holiday, thousands of people will enjoy recreational water activities. But, with approximately 500 people drowning each year from recreational water accidents, it is imperative to spread the message of this holiday weekend about being responsible on or near the water and a simple life-saving strategy – “Wear It!” – wear a life jacket at all times on the water.
HOTRAC, along with the National Safe Boating Council and other campaign partners, want everyone to have fun and stay safe this Independence Day and remind every one of the importance of water safety, such as life jacket wear, boating sober, knowing your limits, and swimming within the limits.
There are two simple things you can do to help spread the word about boating safety.
1. Take the Boating Safety Pledge before hitting the water this July 4th. Share with your family and friends your dedication to boating safety and wearing a life jacket each and every time you are on the water. Sign and share the pledge via Facebook and Twitter.
2. Share your personal boating story with a boating safety message through Labor Day weekend. Whether silly or serious, the best story wins a prize pack, including a free life jacket. You can submit your story by email or online.
For some people, July 4th celebrations may be the only time they get on a boat the entire summer. Whether you’re an experienced or new boater, it is important to follow boating safety procedures and wear a life jacket each and every time you are on the water.
Remember, always "Wear It!" - wear your life jacket at all times while you are on or in the water.
