CNN — One of the country's best-known, modern patriotic songs turned 30 this year.
Lee Greenwood penned his classic "God Bless The USA" in May of 1983.
After its release in 1984, the song made it to number seven on the Billboard hot country singles chart.
The song's popularity surged in later decades, notably during the first Iraq war in the early 90's and in the wake of the the September 11th attacks.
Greenwood told Billboard that when he first started performing the song live, he usually played it in the middle of his shows.
But the tremendous response the song got from the audience quickly led him to make it his closer.
