Stephany Chavez of Bryan is being recognized as the Texas Ducks Unlimited Artist of the year at the annual DU convention in Ft. Worth.
Chavez, 25, was able to combine her love of duck and goose hunting with her talent for wildlife drawings. Her charcoal drawing of a yellow Labrador retriever “Rusty” was judged by the waterfowl conservation organization to be the best artwork in the state.
“My interest in waterfowl art comes from my enthusiasm for duck and goose hunting,” Chavez said. “ In 2005 I became a Ducks Unlimited Member, and I am currently a part of the Brazos Valley DU Committee. I support DU in order to ensure future generations will also enjoy every aspect of waterfowling as I have.”
Chavez’ style of charcoal drawing has not been influenced by standardized art instructors, as she is a self taught artist.
Chavez donates much of her original art to fundraising causes. “"I am very passionate about using my artwork to benefit wildlife as well as others. I have donated several pieces to Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation and to memorial fundraisers for those who protect us and our freedom."
Chavez received her award June 29th at the annual state convention in Ft. Worth.
Her work is displayed on-line at www.facebook.com/StephanyChavezWildlifeArt and at The Frame Gallery in downtown Bryan.
