San Antonio, Texas (KWKT) — At Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, they revealed a monument dedicated to a special group of of service members on base.
Guests who attended the unveiling of the memorial heard speakers tell stories about military working dog heroes and the importance of recognizing their sacrifices.
TSgt. Christopher Dion, a military working dog handler, explained why the memorial was so important.
"The part that is of great importance to me is honoring the tradition that comes before us," said Dion. "This monument speaks to the handlers that came before, as well as the ones today and the ones that will come tomorrow."
The bronze statues of a modern soldier and four different types of military dogs stand in front of a granite wall engraved with information about the military working dog programs on one side and images of handlers and their dogs on the other.
The monument was designed to be more than just a place of remembrance, it was meant to honor the dogs and their handlers.
