West, TX — The West ISD school board has voted to cancel classes on April 17 this year, in remembrance of the one year anniversary of the deadly fertilizer plant explosion.
The following notice has been posted on the district's website, "In respect for the anniversary of the April 17, 2013 explosion, on the Thursday of April 17, 2014, the board has declared a school holiday. We will be moving the April 28th bad weather day to the 17th. In the event that we must use the bad weather day between now and then, you wlll be informed of any adjustments. This day is the Thursday before Good Friday, which will result in a longer weekend. Therefore, school will be held on April 28."
The cancelation of classes on April 17 was approved at the school board meeting on January 15.
On April 17, 2013, 14 people lost their lives when an explosion happened at the West Fertilizer Company.
