Some Waco students get their only meals of the day at school through free and reduced lunch programs. Now, one group is working to make sure kids are fed on the weekend.
It's called the Talitha Koum Backpack Program, and it was started at the Junior League of Waco. Teachers began noticing how hungry children were on Mondays. The Junior League fills backpacks with food for children to take home on Friday.
Principal Ricky Edison at South Waco Elementary School says, "The kids are eager to get it. They can't wait until Friday comes. 'Can I get my backpack, can I get my backpack?' You hear that quite a bit."
Principal Edison says the children are selected when a child asks for help or if teachers see a child who is feeling hungry. Those who receive the backpacks are rarely on the program the entire year.
The director at Talitha Koum says, "There are plenty of statistics where parents go hungry so their children can eat. This is just something to say yes, we are here for you, and, yes, we support you: not only your child, but your whole family."
