MCLENNAN CO. -- Today marks the beginning of National Flu Vaccine week. McLennan County Public Health is giving free flu shots Dec. 6-11.
The virus itself is expected to peak in January. Believe it or not, the flu causes thousands of deaths every year, mostly in older patients.
Public health officials told Fox 44 the vaccine is meant for everyone. "Even if you're young and healthy, and you think, 'How's the flu going to be bad for me?' it can put you out for two weeks and lingering effects even after the flu we've seen people say I was weak for a month," said Spokesperson Kelly Craine.
The vaccine is approved for everyone over 6 months old. Officials say those at high risk should be vaccinated. That includes pregnant women, the elderly and anyone with chronic health conditions.
