With a wide selection of unhealthy foods on a school cafeteria menu, a student could easily consume more than 50 percent of their daily calories, in just 30 minutes.
A new proposed government regulation, regarding the menus, is being considered, however, some local schools have already changed their menus, offering healthier options. Natasha Reagon, the Food Service Director for Midway ISD, says the students are "more active in the classroom, and not getting sick as often."
At Castleman Creek Elementary School, white bread is replaced with whole wheat bread, and fresh produce is available every day. They are also greatly reducing sodium intake by offering healthier alternatives.
Midways ISD officials say the healthy food costs more money, but promoting a healthy lifestyle, for the students, is more important. They still offer children's favoring foods, like pizza and chicken nuggets, but with whole grain bread, and baked chicken rather than fried.
Castleman Creek Elementary still offers desserts and treats from time to time, while teaching them how to live a healthy lifestyle, and enjoy what their eating at the same time.
They plan to continue adding healthy options to the menus, as more food service programs jump on board with this new and improved type of menu.
