"Ice" is the most pure and potent form of Crystal Methamphetamine. Officials say it is distributed through the Mexican drug underworld, and brought into Central Texas. However, these drug traffickers are using religion to try and protect themselves from the law, by praying to Santa Muerte, society's biggest criminal icon.
Police say the problem is that most of these criminals do not care about the crime their committing, and only care about the money. Robert Almonte, United States Marshal, says they know that selling drugs is not acceptable, but as long as their earnings go to a good cause, it's not a problem.
Marshal Almonte was in Waco Thursday morning, to teach law enforcement what to look for when searching for drug traffickers. He says to look for religious icons like "necklaces, rosaries, prayer cards, candles, keychains, and statues."
Almonte's course has already played a role in some big narcotics and money seizures, and his hope is that today's conference will help local law enforcers seek out more drug problems in the future.
