A robbery in Temple on Sunday left an officer and suspect shot, and the lives of innocent bystanders were put at risk.
It all started when two men robbed a Dollar General in Temple. Eriberto Herrera and Andrew Chapa stole from the store, while a third man, Luis Corona Jr., waited in the car. After Herrera and Chapa got back in the car, the three men drove off. That's when an officer spotted them and called for back-up.
Sgt. Brad Hunt says, "He had some back up immediately available right there, so it was actually one of the back up officers that got involved with a foot chase that ended up getting shot by the suspect, and having to return fire."
Sgt. Brad Bennett was taken to the hospital and released late Sunday night. Herrera, who was shot by Sgt. Bennett in the stomach, is still in the hospital.
During the shootout, a bullet from Herrera's gun nearly hit an innocent bystander. A bullet went into the master bedroom of a home on 35th Street, coming only a foot away from hitting the woman inside.
A neighbor says when she heard the gun shots she was terrified. Sasha Maples says, "I was shocked because I was here alone, and nothing has ever happened like that, so i was in shock."
Police tell us they're thankful no lives have been lost, as of now. Herrera is still in police custody at the hospital. Chapa and Corona Jr. are charged with Aggravated Robbery.
