WACO -- The Waco police department is now implementing a new program to assist cognitively and developmentally disabled citizens who wander from their homes.
The Take Home Project, is geared toward any adult or child who may have difficulty communicating due to a disability. Police can search through a database to locate critical information on any registered individuals.
Anita Karney, President of the Heart of Autism Network, said the program can provide a positive outcome to any wandering situation.
"If a first responder encounters someone with autism or with another disability and they're able to pull that information up and they're able to get to the individual and assist them appropriately, that's huge," said Karney.
Karney said safety is always a major concern and having this program in Waco can provide some relief to the individual's family.
