BRYAN -- A late-night Halloween fire destroys a Bryan home and tonight investigators are trying to figure out what happened while the family tells us they're just lucky to be alive.
The trick-or-treaters had come and gone and all was quiet at the Dockery household until a fire ripped through their home.
"It was already on fire when I got up. You know, she was hollering, "Poppa Doc, the house is on fire" so I got up and sure enough I grabbed my fire extinguisher," said home owner, Burtis Dockery.
But the flames kept growing and within minutes the room was engulfed.
"The fire department arrived on scene and they found very heavy fire involvement in the front room of the home, which is the living room," said Bryan fire investigator, Gerald Burnett.
Crews worked late into the night to extinguish the fire but the damage was already done and the house destroyed.
"We're just going to take it one day at a time and salvage what little bit we can but there ain't too much to salvage."
But Dockery said all he cares about is that his family made it out safely.
"We can replace material things but we can't replace our physical self and out mental self, that's up to us. That's up to us to get right and that's what we'll do. We will all adjust."
How the fire started still remains a mystery but Dockery says he plans to rebuild.
