COLLEGE STATION -- Keeping the reputation of Texas A&M clean is critical for the university.
So in an attempt to protect its name, the university has now purchased more than a dozen .xxx domain names.
The school has spent roughly three to five thousand dollars purchasing around 15 domain names like Home of the 12th Man or Texas Aggies in order to block porn sites from using the registered trademarks of the university.
Shane Hinckley, assistant vice president for business development, says blocking or registering these names will help keep the porn industry from capitalizing on the Aggie brand.
"We definitely didn't want a repeat of some things you see in the past. There was a case with the University of North Carolina, uncgirls.com, that was very public a few years back so it's situations like that where we have to be proactive rather than reactive in nature."
And Hinckley says it's a small price to pay to protect the Aggie name and brand.
He also says more domain names could be purchased in the future if new ones pop up.
