WACO -- In less than 24 hours, opening arguments begin in the trial of the former Waco kindergarten teacher charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Back in 2009, Fernando Antonio Campos, 41, was arrested after a female student reported the abuse at the Alta Vista Montessori Magnet school.
There are allegations of Campos abusing up to three girls and one boy.
However, before the investigation was complete Waco ISD allowed Campos back into the classroom.
"The mistake the district made two years ago, was allowing Mr. Campos to go back into the classroom before all the investigations were complete. So regardless of Mr. Campos' guilt or innocence, as is determined hopefully later this week, the damage has been done," Dale Caffey, Waco ISD spokesperson said.
The mistake ended in three employees quitting including the superintendent.
Waco ISD tell us they've improved communication with the Waco Police Department so that if something similar happens again it will be handled better.
