EL PASO --- Thousands of students across the state of Texas will be taking the new Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR starting Monday.
The new STAAR test replaces the TAKS test for students from grades 3 to 8. Students in third through eight grade will be tested in Reading and Math. Fourth and seventh grade students will also be tested in writing, and fifth and eighth graders will also test in science.
The new test is harder, and for the first time ever it will be timed.
Starting in 9th grade, the TAKS is replaced with end-of-course (EOC) exams.
The exams will not count toward a students course grade, but a total of 12 end of course exams need to be passed in order for students to graduate high school.
