WACO -- Over the last year more than 200 complaints have been filed in Central Texas against lawn maintenance and landscaping companies.
So the Better Business Bureau is warning be careful.
"People complain about the services not being delivered as they expected. They complain about billing problems and what they were charged," said Richard Kitterman, regional director for the Better Business Bureau.
And the lack of attention to detail.
"The lawn wasn't mowed as nicely as they thought it should or wasn't edged as completely or thoughtfully as they thought it should," said Kitterman.
So to avoid getting ripped off Kitterman said as with any sizeable purchase, doing your homework is key.
"You can research companies at our web site and see how long they've been in business, do they get complaints, how many complaints have they received," said Kitterman.
Once you've found a trusted lawn care provider, put it in writing.
"The specifics need to be written down. Just try to think of all the possibilities of things that could go wrong and address them in a contract in writing," said Kitterman.
Concentrate on guarantees and refund policies as well as how and when payment will be handled.
Officials also advise to check with previous customers to see what their experience was with the company.
And ask for a lawn inspection and free estimate because companies that quote a price without even seeing your lawn may not be aware of your needs.
