Waco, Tx — Changing the clock for daylight savings time isn't the only thing you need to be on top of this weekend.
Fire officials say it's also the perfect time to check all smoke detectors in your home. Statistics show nearly two-thirds of all home fire deaths result from no working smoke detectors, or there are none present at all. In the event of a fire, smoke spreads quicker than the flames,so the alert given by a smoke detector will give you time to escape.
"The smoke detector is the first line of defense for your family. It alarms your family. It wakes your family up. If you go over fire drills with your family in the home, the kids, let them hear the smoke detectors go off. When they hear them, they'll know what the sound is. They'll know what to do," said Deputy Fire Marshall Keith Guillory of Waco Fire Department.
Firefighters say every family should have two escape routes in place in the event of a fire.
