COLLEGE STATION -- Two weeks ago the College Station city council approved the master plans for a new medical district in south College Station.

Since then the area has been generating a lot of interest with different medical companies and now a third hospital could be moving in down the street.

These 17 acres of undeveloped land don't look like much but that will likely change soon thanks to an economic development agreement approved unanimously by the College Station city council.

"With this development agreement the property owner would be responsible for selling six acres to a behavioral health hospital, a specialized health hospital," said economic development analyst, Randall Heye.

The new hospital would be located in the heart of the medical district, sitting adjacent to the College Station Med.

The city plans on extending roads like Normand Drive to connect to the hospital by agreeing to pay $300,000 in off-site infrastructure upgrades.

Even though the city is already home to The Med and the future Scott and White hospital, the specialized health hospital will provide mental health services currently unavailable in the Brazos Valley.

"They'll be able to treat patients, all sorts of individuals that need these services here within the community," said Heye.

Rather than transporting them all the way to Houston for treatment.

Heye tells us the next step is for council to approve an economic development agreement with the hospital itself.

They're scheduled to do that at next week's meeting.
