Two people are dead as the result of a head-on collision in Waco Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to the area of Old Lorena Road and Church Road, in Waco, off of Hwy 84, to an auto crash. On scene, they discovered two vehicles had been involved in a head-on crash on Old Lorena Road. One of the drivers was killed immediately, due to injuries received in the crash, and the other driver was transported by CareFlight to Hillcrest Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. That driver was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Early investigation shows the vehicles were traveling in the opposite direction of each other on Old Lorena Road. One of the vehicles crossed the centerline into the path of the other, causing the crash. When the vehicles hit, it caused them to spin and land in the ditches of the road. Waco Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist with the scene and is in the process of investigating the crash.

Waco Police Department Accident Reconstruction and Patrol are investigating the crash scene. Waco’s Crime Scene Unit, Victim Service, and multiple law enforcement agencies, including Woodway, Lorena, and DPS, assisted on the scene. Waco Fire was on-scene and assisted with the extraction of one of the victims from a vehicle, who was later identified as James Birl Gray, 68, of Eddy. Gray was driving a 2010 Honda van. Judge Peterson was called to the scene and pronounced one of the Gray deceased.

Elmer Franks, 89, of Hewitt was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Franks was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram pick-up.

Details are limited as authorities are still very early in the beginning of this investigation.

Both Gray and Franks were the sole occupants in their vehicles.
