Waco man found guilty of sexual assault from nearly 20 years ago

A McLennan County jury has found a Waco man guilty of sexually assaulting one of possibly seven children, nearly 20 years ago.

The punishment phase of the trial for Tomas Ramirez, 36, began at 10 a.m. Friday morning and is expected to go into the afternoon.

On Thursday, after more than three hours of deliberation, Ramirez was found guilty of two of the three aggravated sexual assault of a child charges brought against him for one of the victims listed on the indictment. Ramirez was also found guilty of the two child indecency by contact charges listed on the indictment. A spokeswoman with the district attorney's office says the the assaults happened in 1995, 1996, and 1997. Each of the counts of aggravated sexual assault were for different dates and locations where they occurred.

On July 28, 2011, U.S. Marshals arrested Ramirez in Birmingham, Alabama on seven counts of aggravated sexual assault. The charges stemmed from an initial report filed by a known acquaintance of Ramirez, who reported the abuse. Ramirez left the Waco area shortly after the investigation began.

The seven victim’s ages, all of whom are acquaintances, range from 7 to 10 years-old at the time the assaults started. The incidents began in the early 90’s. The Waco Police Department was made aware when one of the victims reported the abuse on June 28, 2010.

Trials for the other six victims will be at a later date.
