Waco man gets life sentence, then another 20 years

A Waco man will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars after being given a life sentence in a state courtroom yesterday.

Juan Martinez III tried to rob a Temple College professor last April in a parking lot but wound up waiting for cops to arrive when the professor pulled out a gun of his own and ordered Martinez to wait for cops to arrive.

Martinez kicked out a window in the patrol car while under arrest. He later spat and cursed upon the officers during the ride to jail.

It took the 19th District Court jury less than an hour to give Martinez his two sentences: Life for the armed robbery and 20 years for the window.

Martinez, 43, who has 13 prior convictions, will not be eligible for parole until 2028.
